On the 25th November the annual Southern Area BMFA Balsa Brain Quiz was held and for the first time Wimborne MAC entered a team, the Wimborne Wonders, consisting of David Tappin and Peter Willis. The Balsa Brain quiz evening trophy is now 34 years old, and this event continues to draw support from many local clubs.
The venue used was the Hamble Social Club, which is also the home of the Firebirds MAC (A club co-founded by Peter Willis and Pat Parson back in the 1970s). This venue has been used for several years now by the Southern Area BMFA and always provides good hospitality, excellent food and great facilities to ensure that the evening is a success.
This year (due to Steve Warren’s health problems) Ken Gale took over the task of quizmaster, no mean feat as the reading out of the questions and answers is the easy bit, the preparation of the power-point presentation takes an enormous amount of time, so our thanks to Ken for this.
The evening started with an opening address from Firebirds chairman Pat Parsons and then the competition commenced with 2 rounds of 15 questions per round. Our brains were taxed with many old free flight designs, designers/manufacturers or obscure engines to be identified/named.
At the half way stage the teams all enjoyed the free buffet with some gentle banter around the display of models provided by member clubs.
A raffle was then held to award a significant number of prizes, donated by Flite Hook who always support the event with prizes. Another 2 rounds were then completed and the final scores calculated.
As you will see below although we did not walk away with the trophy we did not come, last which for our first attempt and such a small team was not bad. Next year perhaps we can field a full team? The teams and results this year were:-
● Firebirds juniors - scored 50 points
● Firebirds A team - scored 72 points
● LeeBees scored 77 points
● CADMAC scored 57 points
● Waltham Chase scored 89 points
● Wimborne Wonders scored 52 points
● Petersfield Splots scored 40 points
● SMAC scored 80 points
● SAM 1066 scored 81 points
As you can see, in all 9 teams took part and after the completion of the 4 rounds the final winners were the Waltham Chase Aeromodellers, so the trophy is awarded to them until next year when Southern Area BMFA will again convene to hold Balsa Brain 2017.
