BMFA Stand

Wimborne MAC were invited by the Ferndown Library in Dorset to attend their annual Hobbies Day on April 11th 2019.  We were given ample space to set up our stand to promote our hobby, our club and the BMFA.  We took various model aircraft to show the types of models that can be flown from Scale Jets to Trainers.  On show to the public were a small BAe Hawk electric jet, a high wing trainer and a large scale turbine Hawker Hunter minus the wings due to space restrictions.

There was a promotional stand for the BMFA (British Model Flying Association) who support model flying clubs, arrange public liability insurance, safety guidance and most importantly are in close co-ordination with the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) who have control of all British airspace.  This is even more important now after the the recent spate of multicopter near misses and the worse case of irresponsible flying at Gatwick last Christmas.  These earlier issues have done some damage to model flying and the responsible majority, safety conscious, model aircraft pilots are now paying a price with more legislation and controls.  This is where the BMFA now negotiates on our behalf with the Civil Aviation Authority and Dept for Transport for the benefit of model flying clubs and safe responsible pilots.

With the stand at the library we were able to talk to all ages of the public about model flying, safety and most of all the fun and the challenges that belonging to a BMFA recognised club can bring.  Also to encourage the younger generation of either gender who have an interest in flying to start now.  Some of these youngsters will possibly become skilful model pilots or maybe become airline pilots in the future.  Wimborne MAC already have a number of young teens of both sexes flying confidently but we seek to recruit more to continue this fun and fascinating hobby into the future.

Talking and meetiing with the general public comes with a bonus especially from the older generation who tell us they recognise some of the scale models from when they were small children and tell us their stories of wartime and post war of watching of these aircraft inflight.
