Thursday was an overcast day with little or no wind. had a few flights with the Wing. It is only 900 mm wing span and black. Not the best of colours I suspect on a grey to dark grey sky. Anyway on the last flight which was about 3pm and getting dismal I flew it round a bit for the benefit of the HD Cam, then placed in loiter Mode so it would circle around the GPS position at a preset radius.
I then switched back to manual and decided go a lot higher for more views. It was getting really small now but I could see the strobe on the underside. The strobe started to get fainter and thought this is way way out. Now the UAV is not really visible but it was still within control range according to the RSSI feed. Thinking, how to fly something that is a dot or less. Eureka! Click RTH. After what seemed eternity here it comes, cruising along at 40 metres altitude and began it's circle above the far side of our field where it had been Armed.
In fact it WAS a long way out as can be seen in the image below and the GPS Data The burial mound in the far centre of the next field to the field adjacent to our strip is where it got too before RTH.
