Axi Motors was created by Chris73
Hi

I am just putting together a 3D foamy and the recommended motor is an Axi 2217/16, I have an Axi 2814/16 laying around that i am not using

1) Is the 2814/16 a suitable alternative to the 2217/16
2) If not can somebody please recommend a cheap alternative

Dont really want to spend a lot as after all it is just a piece of flying foam, that WILL get crashed LOTS

Not a lot of difference Chris. All running in the mid 1000 kv band. I assume your talking the Gold Line versions. Both handle 3 cell Lipos. The 2217 (2-3 cells) has the small 3.17 shaft (easily bendable and I personally find prop adaptors limited at this size) whereas the 2814 (325 watts) has a 5mm shaft. The 2814 case is slightly longer at 38mm compared to the 2217 at 35mm. Use what you got Chris. I have a couple of 2217 types from Turnigy and Emax. I used them to power my flying wings.

I'll hazard a guess at this 3D foamy weighing no more than a kilo all up.

Footnote Edit. The Axi motor probably cost more than the plane...........

Thanks Phil

Probably no more than 700 - 800g with the battery

And yes the motor did cost more than the plane, hence the reason i dont want to buy another one unless I have to ;)

Both motors have a KV of about 1050 so they should spin a 10 x ? or 11 x ? prop about the same. However, the motor you have is 20g heavier so it might not balance without 5g of lead on the tail. So you'll be a little heavier which might suit Cashmoor?

The Turnigy SK3 2836 1040 motor is a replacement for the AXI 2217/16 if you want the lighter motor without the AXI expense.

Thanks Mike

Will stick with the motor I have then, dont think 20g is going to be noticeable to me, and I can always place the battery a little further back to help with the balance

And if i shop around i can probably find a battery that is slightly lighter than the recommended one so AUW will be the same
