Bearing removal help required was created by JonTappin
Stripped the West 53 from the Curare down to replace the bearing, when removing the crankshaft, the bearing fell apart, leaving the outer ring in place and I can't get it out. Tried heating the crankcase and cooling the bearing but no joy, can't get hold of it with anything. Do any of you engineering types have any bright ideas or suitable tools for removal?

Oh dear Jon. Assuming there is a gap between the bearing case and the crankcase or an edge then I think you are in need of a bearing puller with outside grips. But for something that small, possibly a specialist tool. You have tried the obvious ideas. Can you see an edge from the other end that maybe a small parallel punch could get a tap on. Maybe just engines could help

Hi Jon

I assume it fell apart because the ball cage failed. If you have the bearing inner and balls, you could try reassembly without a cage.

Offset the inner to the outer and drop the balls into the gap generated. Then centralise the inner by pushing the balls around until they are equally spaced. Some bearings are assembled this way whereas others have to have their outers squeezed slightly to get all the balls in. (If assembly is difficult, you might get away with using one ball less.

regards

Ron

I have a three legged puller but I think you knew that so maybe you don't believe there is enough exposed land to get hold of.

Note for Phil C, I know it should be "of which to get hold".

Have you tried leaving the entire assembly in your oven for a good while then take it out and tap it a few times against work surface, likely to just pop out! I've done this before
