When is it too windy? was created by Chris73
It feels like it's been ages since I last went flying, and with high winds forecast for this weekend it looks like no flying again. I know it's all down to the individual but what realistically is the maximum wind you can fly in, I think the competition's will fly up to 25mph?? ,but do they take into account the forecasted wind gust??

For you Chris, anything over 10 ;)

25 is probably a sensible upper limit, but it does depend on other things, if it is a cross wind then the limit might be less, equally if turbulent then less again. I have flown comps in the past at 25+, but I'm not sure I would practice in that unless I was really desperate, not sure you would really learn much from it.

When your hat keeps blowing off :(

I guess it depends on the wind direction; Cashmoor is a nightmare with the wind blowing over the hedge line. Personally if XC is showing gusts much above 20-25mph I start to lose interest. Oddly enough that's the point where slope soaring starts to get fun. So the answer is: Don't worry about the wind, just choose the right model :)

XC is showing a possible window on Sunday afternoon ATM

The FAI limit for competition is 8 meters/sec which is just under 18 mph.

This limit even applies to F3F slope soaring events which seems a bit strange, I thought that was about the wind speed when the fun begins!

Gusts are not referenced in the regulations.

Is that a constant 25 or gusting up to 25??

I'm choosing to ignore the first comment :P

>10-15mph and its time to go sloping flatfield isn't much fun above that.
