Colin I think that is the way to go, In my opinion stabilizers are good in windy conditions on the normal aircraft that we fly when you have time to test it at altitude and have time to switch it on and off if you haven't got everything set up right, but in the situation you were in fighting to control it the last thing you would have been thinking of would be to switch stabilization on or off. I have only saved a plane once by switching on self leveling mode.Best option seems lower rates & expo - then give it another go
with a couple of spotters on standby !!
