Phil - Great hand launching technique , she's welcome to launch my gliders at Cashmoor.
No name's mentioned but can only be an improvement over some launches - nose high , tip stall but enough power
to get away with it.

Starboard wing, nearly ready to cover. I decided to leave it as designed, so no extra spars, Mike.

I will complete the location tubes with laminating epoxy after the wings have been offered up to the fuselage.
You can just make out the built in washout at the tip.

The set up used in the videoed model above was an E-Flite E46 on 4S
I see Turnigy do a G46 which is similar, on the face of it.
The airframe will weigh 1553 gm or say 3-1/2 lb. That's including all completed parts, all wood and wire for the fus, the 5" spoked wheels, a bag of nylon two coats of dope and two JR591 servos.
The motor weighs 303 gm (0.67 lb), a Turnigy Nanotech 4s 2200 battery 239 gm (0.53 lb), a 60 A ESC say 1/2 lb
Add 1/2 lb for wires etc. Grand total weight should be 5.7 lb plus prop and driver.
Model is 51-1/2 in w/s and has a wing area of 564 in sq
Motor spec is here.

Am I on the right lines?

Firstly, if this model were built for 'glow' you might use a 40/46 but would be stooging around at part throttle for most or all of the flight. as such, the E46/G46 motor is going to be way too powerful for this model. The lighter G32 would probably give ample power, however...
...secondly, the model has a short nose and might benefit from a heavier motor, so the E46/G46 might be spot on.

Finally, if the model does balance tail heavy, you could use a bigger battery, say 3000mAh, instead of the 2200mAh...better to have a longer flight than carrying around lead.

Phil - Been doing a few basic sums based on your data, Mike just got in ahead of me.
I'm in general agreement with Mike & here's my bit.
The E46 & G46 have identical specs & are rated at 40 A continuous, based on 4 cell LiPo this will give around 640 Watts.
With the model weighing say 6 ibs you have on tap 100 Watts / pound ie plenty in hand.
The wing area & weight given equates to a wing loading of 24 ozs per sq foot so the extra power may be a benefit.
Flying around on half throttle ( 20 A ) you will probably get around 8 mins on the 2,200, if you need extra weight in the
nose then a bigger battery is the answer. I have some 4 cell 3,300 LiPo's which we could do some balance & power / prop tests with.
Trust this helps.
Colin.
