Winter build project: Wolfgang Matt’s ATLAS

Many years ago, I helped to design and create a jig for Slazenger to drill a golf club head for the shaft to fit in. We asked if there were any drawings, and were told NO. We asked where they wanted the hole drilled, and the foreman, with his carpenter's pencil, drew a cross on the wooden blank and said "B'aht theeer, Lad!"

(Excuse Yorkshire twang but the factory was in Wakefield)

Ahh....that makes sense then, the f3a model I design and built in the 90's was done with exactly that design philosophy

On the basis you both made the same mistake, there are probably loads of other Atlas' all over the world the same as yours!

Do you have a photo of this plane?

As to Mike and I making the same mistake and others doing the same, I think it's unlikely to happen for anyone putting it together for a glow engine because I'm assuming the bits marked "Bearer" are what you mount the engine to, and they are running parallel to the down thrust angle.

Chris don't don't get too technical with dimensions! mm, inches, thou, etc. Phil C uses the old measurement of inches and that looks about right. It has worked out alright for him for millenia. :lol:

Seriously though, I did also in repairing a damaged model's firewall I added in a degree or so of thrust angle. After the first flight figured out that the angle had already been built in to the fuselage, so instead of 1.5 deg I had inadvertently given it 3 deg or more. Epoxy said not a chance of cutting out again. Good old flat washers under motor mount corrected it. Mustang flies great now. Although in fairness the Mustang is not a precision flight model.

Yes it was you... :lol: Very interesting launch and initial flight. Amazing how well a few well placed washers can do. It's quite flyable now... Shame about the Lipo though!
