In a vain attempt to bring back some relevance to this topic, I've had a quick play in Google Earth, and if I've got my measurements right, this is what the 'Box' looks like for F3A at our site:

150meters seems a long way out, and 120º seems very wide

What seems to be really convenient is that the corners of our field seem to line up with the 120º arc.

But you forgot something in your calculations Chris, the pilots box is not in the middle of the field :P

I knew that...

After a moments thought to salvage the situation...

Exactly Chris, I'd hoped someone would catch on to my subtle hint, and I have to ask the question why not? It would clearly make sense for the pilot box to be central, then the field is optimally laid out for F3A using the corners as guides. And it's less far to walk too ;)

Hi Chris, we moved the pilot box to where it is to shift the flightline further away from the village. So there is a good reason ;)

I think you will find the box is absolutely enormous and you will only have problems if you are too close in. When the big boys play F3A you can hardly see the models when they fly to the edges of the box.

JRI wrote of the 'big boys' where

Those big boys aren't going to get very good scores for their turnaround manoeuvres - even NO (not observed) - on their score sheets. Judges don't have telescopic vision, if they can't see the model they aren't going to guess if it would have been worthy of a score. Those pilots may be big but they aren't very smart!
