I had always soaked the whole piece both sides first. Maybe this was not necessary after all.

I'm not bending it to such a tight radius as you have done on your u/c fairings. And the balsa I have is balsa cabin soft/light grade which absorbs water very quickly.

All my balsa sheet is medium grade so that may account for easy splits if not soaked.

I didn't do much yesterday but did manage to fix the fin to the fuselage and also get the rudder completed. The top of the fin is sandwich of 2 sheets of light balsa with a 1/32 ply filling. This allows me to sand it down to a taper and a) retain strength and b) allows me to sand each side equally down to the ply

Wings cut. Retract plate added.Another plate is added to the top of the wing and 5mm dowels tie both surfaces together so that landing loads are spread through the whole wing...hopefully!

Wing skins made from six sheets of 4" balsa and 1 sheet of 3". This is for just one half, so a total of 12 x 4" and 2 x 3" sheets in total...it's a big wing!

What are you using to join the sheets? Excellent progress Mike but you will have nothing left to do by Easter Weekend and then what?

Tape sheets together with masking tape. Turn over and use the tape as a hinge to open the joint. Aliphatic glue then pinned flat for a couple of hours. Unpin and remove tape sooner rather than later. Leave it too long and the tape sometimes stays stuck to the joint.

The good side is the taped side.
